Gerald Joseph “Jerry” Simone, 83, of Pittsburg, KS died 10:52 p.m. Thursday October 1, 2026, at the Mercy Hospital in Joplin, MO following an illness.
Jerry was born Feb. 21, 1943, in Weir, KS the son of Jack Sr. and Lucille Marie (Martin) Simone. He was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Weir High School.
On Sept. 16, 1967, Jerry married Carol Ann Meriaux at the St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Scammon, KS; she preceded him in death on Sept. 15, 2022.
Jerry worked as a Post Master for the Weir Post Office for 35 years. Jerry was a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church; he enjoyed golfing at the Crestwood Country Club; he loved his Tuesday Morning Rosary Group; his Saturday Coffee Club and most of all his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his children Fr. Mike Simone of Pittsburg, KS and Kay Lynn “Simone” Gerwert and husband Mike of Union, KY; brothers Jack Simone Jr. and wife Mary Lou of Pittsburg, KS and Steve Simone and wife Mary Kay of Pittsburg, KS; grandchildren Joe Gerwert and wife Hannah of Bellevue, KY and Jacob Gerwert of Newport, KY and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, parents and an infant sister Ann Marie Simone.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday Oct. 6, 2026, at the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Scammon, KS. Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg, KS; friends may call the funeral home after 2 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers the family asks expressions of sympathy to be in the form of memorials to the Priest Retirement Education Fund and/or Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund and/or a sleeve of golf balls for the Ladies SMC Golf Team.
