SOUTHEAST KANSAS — Every December, on the second Saturday of the month, volunteers across the country gather at public and private cemeteries to lay wreaths on the graves of the nation’s veterans. The tradition began in 1992 when Worchester Wreaths, a small wreath-making company in Maine, donated surplus wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery. From there it quickly grew into a community effort by the entire town of Harrington, with local businesses contributing funds and logistical support to transport the wreaths to Washington, D.C. For more than a decade, it was a quiet little tribute.
