GIRARD, Kan. — At last Friday’s county commission meeting, Mike Walden, executive director for the Southeast Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center, petitioned the commissioners for a letter of support for a license that would allow Children In Need of Care (CINC) that are in the custody of the Department of Children and Family (DCF) to be housed at by the Regional Justice Authority facility in Girard. “This license would allow the Southeast Kansas Region a safe and secure placement for individuals who have met the criteria for a Child In Need of Care case and have exhausted all other outside-the-home placements,” Walden said. “This would be a 90-day placement with exceptions of shorter to longer stays depending on an individual’s need.” There is currently one secure placement in the state, located in Junction City, Kansas, and it has a three- to six-month waitlist.
