Pittsburg marks Founders’ Day with community aerial photo

PITTSBURG, KS –  Pittsburg citizens will be tested on how well they follow directions, Wednesday, when they arrange themselves into a giant number 150 for a historical aerial photograph on Founders Day, May 20.

To mark the City of Pittsburg’s 150th anniversary, the Celebrate Pittsburg Committee has asked citizens to gather at 4 p.m., Wednesday, in the field next to the Pittsburg State soccer pitch at Ford and Homer Streets and arrange themselves into the shape of the numeral 150 so a photograph can be taken from a bird’s-eye view.

Anticipating a big turnout, organizers said that once the numeral is formed, the rest of the participants will gather around it for the photo, which will be posted online and on social media.

“We are so excited to bring everyone together for this historical photo,” Celebrate Pittsburg Committee President Sarah Runyon said. “It will be a fun way to look back for the next historical anniversary.”

During the event, a proclamation will mark Pittsburg’s 150th “birthday,” and the Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon cutting to celebrate the anniversary. Food trucks and Pitt150 merchandise will be available at the event.

Parking will be available in the lots by Gorilla Village, across from the Weede PE Building and at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled and announced on the Pittsburg 150 Celebration Facebook page.
