In the 1800s and 1900s, fraternal benefit societies were very popular in the United States because this was a way that the working class could afford financial protection. This is evident by the number of grave markers that have fraternal symbols on them. And, of course, most of the fraternal societies maintained a lodge where people could meet in fellowship.
