GIRARD, Kan. — Bryce Zirfas and Marlene Spence of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment’s Surface Mining Unit spoke with Crawford County commissioners at Tuesday’s meeting about a reclamation project centered on the intersection of E. 600th and S. 230th, just a mile north of Grasshopper Corner in Frontenac. According to Zirfas, KDHE will fill in the pit running along the east side of 230th as it presents a safety hazard during periods of heavy rains by overflowing the roadway with running water. Zirfas also said the culverts under the roadways now are not sufficient to handle current drainage as they are nearly filled with mud and debris.
