Excerpted stories in Crawford County newspaper archives 100 years ago July 12 - 14, 1925 The last of ten racing pigeons, liberated yesterday morning in Albany, Ill., at 5 a.m., arrived at their lofts at the home of Joe Zerngast, route 8, this morning at 6 o’clock. The first three birds arriving together at 5:42 p.m., yesterday, having completed the 550 miles in twelve hours and 42 minutes, averaging 43 miles an hour, or 1,260 yards a minute. The fourth bird arrived at 6:07 p.m., the fifth at 6:40 p.m., and the sixth at 8:15 p.m. at a time when it began to get dark.
