100 Years Ago June 24, 1922 Demands of a committee of miners appointed at a mass meeting in Croweburg, that Howat supporters be restored to membership in the Mine Workers union, that the autonomy of the district be restored and that a separate contract for the district be negotiated, were presented to the provisional district officials in conference yesterday, but were not granted. Lieutenant Ennis C. Whitehead, scout for a group of 20 army planes which is flying from Houston to Michigan, arrived here this afternoon, picking a landing field one and a one-half mile northwest of the city limits for the squadron of flyers which is scheduled to arrive here Monday or Tuesday morning. Whitehead "picked" the field from the air, saying it would accommodate several planes at one time.
