EDITORS/NEW DIRECTORS: The Scripps National Spelling Bee celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, when 243 spellers ranging in age from 8 to 14 will compete for a trophy, more than $50,000 in cash and prizes and — most important — recognition as the best speller in the English language. The bee will be held from May 27-29 at its longtime venue, a convention center just outside Washington in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Last year's runner-up, Faizan Zaki — who lost in a “spell-off” tiebreaker to champion Bruhat Soma — is among the competitors, and Scripps tweaked the competition rules this year to make the spell-off less likely.
