The TOPS KS 0599 Pittsburg Chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) surprised and celebrated their KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) members at their meeting last week. To earn KOPS status, members need to reach their weight goals and stay within that range. The three KOPS members are, from left: Nancy Scott, a four-year member; Linda Culbertson, a 13-year member; and Wanda Porter, a 20-year member this coming October. Each KOPS member received a certificate, a KOPS in Status charm and a beautiful plant. Emails were also sent to all TOPS members to find out how the three KOPS members had influenced their weight loss journey. Their responses were added into the KOPS pledge.

The temperature reached as high as 97 degrees Tuesday afternoon, but that did not stop local 4-H members from participating in the livestock weigh-in at the 4-H Horse Arena, located at the Crawford County Fairgrounds. Along with Thursday and Friday’s schedule of animal shows, the annual 4-H Livestock Sale is scheduled to take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday at L. Murphy Arena on the northwest side of the fairgrounds. In addition, all buyers must check in at 1 p.m.

Through Saturday afternoon, the SEK Humane Society hosted its first-ever “Cat Café" pop-up event at its facility located at 485 E. 560th Ave. In addition to the free snacks and coffee from Root Coffeehouse, the adoption fees for the shelter cats were reduced to just $20 at the event. All adoptable cats are already spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations as well.

Prior to a musical performance from Southeast Kansas native Dustin Treiber, the Girard High School Reflections group performed at the Friends of Crawford State Park’s weekly “Music on the Patio” at Lake View Café, held every Friday. Thursday evening, the Pittsburg Public Library hosted its final weekly “Teen Nights” program, where kids sixth through 12th grade join library staff for drinks, snacks, video games, movies, anime, and good vibes in the library’s meeting room. Thursday’s “Good Vibes Party” featured an end of summer celebration with a 60s and 70s theme that had popcorn and refreshments for attendees, along with classic hits and tie-dye.
