PITTSBURG, Kan. — In a private ceremony, cousins Ken Wilbert and Jim Kuhns pay their respects to Kuhns’ father, James, at the Highland Park cemetery in Pittsburg. Wilbert, who had recently returned from France, had two small bags of sand taken from the Normandy beaches, one from Omaha Beach and the other from Utah. Wanting to honor his uncle, a veteran of D-Day, Wilbert called his cousin in Texas for an impromptu ceremony over the Memorial Day weekend. more

TOPEKA, Kan. — At the invitation of Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, Jaxson Robinson of Girard High School was selected to attend the 40th Annual Governor’s Scholars Awards Program on May 7 in Topeka. The recognition ceremony honored the top academic one percent of Kansas high school seniors. Scholars were selected from accredited public and private schools in the state. more

TOPEKA, Kan. — On Wednesday morning, the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) approved a siting permit establishing the route for the Wolf Creek to Blackberry 345 kV transmission line in Southeast Kansas. Approximately 83 miles of the line will be in Kansas, crossing Coffey, Anderson, Allen, Bourbon and Crawford Counties. NextEra Energy Transmission Southwest (NEET Southwest) will construct and operate the line. more
CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) expects to begin a mill and overlay project on U.S. 69 in Cherokee County on Tuesday, May 30. The 12-mile project starts at the Oklahoma-Kansas state line and continues north to the U.S. 69/U.S. 160/K-7 junction. No work will take place within the city limits of Columbus. more
