County spends last of ARPA funds

Mike Bodensteiner of Greenbush appeared before the Crawford County Commission on Friday to discuss funding of small childcare centers. Although several larger childcare providers in the county have already received federal funding, according to Bodensteiner, $150,000 from the American Rescue Plan Act was also set aside by the county to fund childcare centers with fewer than 99 children. Each smaller center is eligible for a one-time payment of $2,000. more
USD 249 Superintendent Rick Simoncic presented assessment data at Monday night’s school board meeting in Frontenac. Starting with a class’s third grade year, the data showed the progression of each of this year’s classes through tenth grade in the subjects of mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA).  more

Arma mourns loss of mayor

Arma residents are mourning the loss of Mayor Rock Anderson, who passed away last Tuesday, Dec. 6, after a long battle with cancer. A native of Pennsylvania, it was not until later in life that Anderson came to Arma, where he worked as a manager for General Machinery in Pittsburg and O’Brien in Fort Scott. Anderson was elected mayor just last year.  more
