Dragons to send eight to state, finish fourth in regional

Pittsburg girls wrestling qualified eight wrestlers for the Class 5A state tournament and finished fourth with 135 points Saturday in the Class 5A East regional at Bonner Springs.

Basehor-Linwood won the regional title with 275, Shawnee Heights finished second with 212.5 and Kansas City Piper took third with 153.5 points.

Savannah Shires (115 pounds) won a regional title, Kaitlyn Allen (130), Kiana Berryman (140) and Ashley Batres Perez (235) each finished second, Brecken Campbell (135) finished third, Kylin Perry (155) placed fifth and Yeshvi Patel (105) and Alexis Burns (145) both placed seventh. Kya Galindo (125) missed on a fourth state qualification.

Shires (29-4) pinned Leavenworth's Olivia Gardner in 1 minute, 44 seconds, Basehor-Linwood's Delaney Locke in 2:44 and Piper's Kali Black in a mere 20 seconds.

Allen (19-2) won 7-0 over De Soto's Deserae Willis in a semifinal match and pinned Leavenworth's Blake Lightfoot in 1:08 during their quarterfinal. Allen lost by fall to Kansas City Washington's Reddi Johnson (29-2) in the championship match.

Berryman (27-5) won 4-0 over Basehor-Linwood's Devin Seward during their semifinal and pinned Leavenworth's McKenzie Eagle in 4:59 during their quarterfinal. Piper's Maia Dolinar (37-3) pinned Berryman in the championship match.

Perez (25-8) pinned Piper's Nia Patterson in 2:46 and Shawnee Heights' Stella Engel in 1:27 during semifinal and quarterfinal matches, respectively, before a loss by fall to Leavenworth's Saryja Nelson (25-2) in the championship match.

All four Pittsburg state-ranked wrestlers either placed first or second.

Campbell (30-9) lost her first match, pinned by De Soto's Leah Marovec in 5:38 during their quarterfinal. Campbell then won her next four matches, all four by fall, including Marovec for third place in 1:58. Campbell also pinned Kansas City Turner's Shyann Herring in 41 seconds, Spring Hill's Allison Terry in 2:43 and Kansas City Harmon's Nancy Zaragoza in 1:25.

Perry (29-8) split her four matches, pinning Leavenworth's Natalie Behmke for fifth in 42 seconds and Kansas City Turner's Alexandria Moore during the blood round in 9 seconds. Perry lost by fall against Spring Hill's Cali Claar (25-15) and Basehor-Linwood's Falasteen Shalabi (29-5).

Patel (8-16) split her four matches and Burns (19-18) went 1-2; both of them won the seventh-place math. Patel pinned Shawnee Heights' Camarra Smith in 58 seconds and Burns pinned Piper's Olivia Schneider in 3:57.

The Dragons' eight qualifiers begin state competition Feb. 27 at the 5,000-capacity Heartland Credit Union Arena in Park City.
