State opens voting on personalized plate design

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) announced Monday that voting is now open for Kansas residents who wish to help select the design for the state’s personalized license plates. A similar citizen voting process was used for the first time in 2023 to choose the design for the state’s standard plates.

Voting began Monday morning and concludes at 5 p.m. on Friday. The winning design will be announced on Aug. 12. Voters can make their wishes known at ksplates.kansas.gov and unlike most other elections, voters may cast their ballots multiple times.

“We know how passionate Kansans are about license plates, and this initiative aims to give the public a direct say in selecting the next personalized plate design that will be featured on vehicles across the state for years to come,” said David Harper, director of KDOR Division of Vehicles. “We look forward to seeing which design Kansans choose.”

The five designs from which voters may choose, incorporate the “To the Stars” marketing theme. The new plate, which will be issued in 2025, will replace the current “Powering the Future” design.

The KDOR said it used feedback from the standard license plate voting last year to develop the five designs for the personalized plates. As a result, the designs feature a rising sun, a Kansas sunflower, wheat and the Flint Hills.

Last year’s standard plate selection was a learning experience for the state. Many citizens objected vehemently to the original design because it came perilously close to using University of Missouri colors. In response, Gov. Laura Kelly allowed the state’s citizens to choose the design through an online vote. The winner of that online election, receiving 53% of 270,000 votes, was a design that featured the dome of the Kansas Capitol topped by the Ad Astra statue.

“It’s great to see Kansans’ passion for representing our great state,” she said.
