Merry Carol Lance

Merry Carol Lance, 98, of Pittsburg, passed away 11:41 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024, at Via Christi Village.

She was born December 25, 1925, at Pittsburg, to Edward Peake and Edith Leila (Pease) Sherman. She graduated from College High School and later from Kansas State Teachers College, in three years, with a bachelor's degree in education.

She married Dr. Raymond Walter Lance on Dec. 25, 1945, in Pittsburg, KS, at the United Brethren Church. They were married 65 years. He preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 2011.

Mrs. Lance taught school, before she left education and worked in the office for her husband and was a homemaker.

Membership was held in College Heights United Methodist Church, where she taught all ages of Sunday School. She also taught Sunday School at the Arma United Methodist Church. What many will remember Merry by her ministry of sending cards and letters to friends and family, along with being known also as a Prayer Warrior and volunteer.

Merry is survived by a daughter, Susan (Thomas) Miller of Springville, AL; a son, Ray (Cheryl) Lance of Girard, KS; Grandchildren, Sarah (Jonathan) Murray of Birmingham, AL, and Andrew (Carrie) Lance of Pittsburg, KS; and great grandchildren, Caeden Murray, John Murray, Josiah Lance, Gabe Lance and Madison Lance.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters, Doris Mitchell, Annie Mahan, and Esther Mayfield.

A visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12 at the Brenner Mortuary. A private family graveside will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery.
