David Purdy

David Purdy of Pittsburg, KS passed away July 12, 2023, at his home following a lengthy illness.

David was born November 2, 1933 in Holton, KS and adopted by Harry and Coral Purdy of Pittsburg, KS.

He was a life-long resident of Pittsburg, graduating from Pittsburg High School in 1952, and attended college in Pittsburg.

David was a veteran of the Korean era, serving in the Navy and retired from the US Air Force as well as serving as Past Commander for the Pittsburg American Legion Post 64 and Commander of VFW Post 1158 and actively involved in Pittsburg Avenue of Flags.

David belonged to the Pittsburg Masonic Lodge #187, Weir #274, York Rite Chapter #58, Commandery #29 and Council #27. He was a life member of the Scottish Rite Consistory of Fort Scott, Hundred Million Dollar Club of Mirza Shrine and Past Master and life member of Pittsburg Masonic Lodge #187. He was a member of the Mirza Color Guard, Hospital Dad's and Legion of Honor as well as NARFE.

David worked for the Pittsburg Post Office retiring in 1989. He served six years as an officer in the State Letter Carriers Association.

David was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 47 years, Shirley.

He is survived by sister-in-law, Sue Mishler, of Tulsa, OK, and brother-in-law, Maurice Sears of Jackson, GA, as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.

The family offers special thanks to Harry Hynes Hospice, Kyra Hensley and the numerous others for helping to care for David these last couple of years.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday July 17, 2023 at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home of Pittsburg, with Chaplain Randy Beeman officiating. Masonic Rites will be given at 6 p.m. Sunday evening. Family will receive friends following the rites until 8 p.m. Burial will be at Ft. Scott National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m. Monday where Military Rites will be given. The family suggests Expression of sympathy be in the form of memorials to the Pittsburg Avenue of Flags and/or the Mirza Shire Hospital Dad's Transportation Fund.
