Initially appointed as the interim fire chief in September, after Chief Dennis O’Reily announced his retirement, Taylor Cerne (pronounced Chur-nee) officially became chief on Monday, Nov. 14.  A 17-year veteran of the Pittsburg Fire Department, Cerne began his fire career at the age of 20 while working at a grain elevator in Labette County when his boss asked him to volunteer with the Hackberry-Bartlett Fire Department in 2001. more

Carl Wood said he can’t wait to get back to work as a county commissioner. He previously held the post until four years ago when he was ousted by challenger Jeremy Johnson. On Nov. 8, Wood reclaimed the seat from Johnson by nearly 300 votes.  more

Nearly two weeks have passed since Third District County Commissioner Jeremy Johnson was defeated in his reelection bid by Republican challenger and former commissioner Carl Wood.
