Multiple accidents leave two dead in Cherokee, Bourbon County

Two people died and three were injured in separate crashes less than 24 hours of each other in Cherokee and Bourbon County over the weekend. 

Cherokee County 

A 67-year-old Joplin woman died in a head-on collision late Friday afternoon, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).

Crash investigators say the crash happened at 4:19 p.m. on Friday approximately 523 feet west of 63rd Road, 5.8 miles west of K-7 on Highway 160. 

Skylar Cauble, 18, of Joplin was driving westbound on 160. Violet Knowles, 67, of Joplin was traveling eastbound on 160. Cauble’s 2003 Chevy Silverado failed to negotiate a gradual curve by 63rd Road, overcorrected and veered into the path of Knowles’ 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis, according to KHP. 

Knowles was killed in the accident and next of kin has been notified. 

Cauble was transported to Mercy Hospital Columbus for treatment of suspected minor injuries. according to the KHP. A 17-year-old occupant of Cauble’s vehicle sustained suspected serious injuries and was also taken to Mercy Hospital Columbus. 

 

Bourbon County 

A 58-year-old Hutchinson man was killed Saturday afternoon in a motorcycle crash in Bourbon County, according to the KHP. 

The crash occurred around 3:46 p.m. along U.S. 54 at S. 100 Road. 

Daniel Blake, 60, of Fort Scott was traveling eastbound on U.S. 54 in a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis. Ryan Simpson, 58, of Hutchinson was heading westbound on U.S. 54 on a 2015 Harley Davidson Road Glide. Blake’s vehicle failed to yield and turned in front of the Harley Davidson as the motorcycle overturned and struck the Grand Marquis. 

Simpson was killed in the accident and next of kin has been notified. Cynthia Simpson, a 58-year-old occupant from Hutchinson, was taken to Freeman Hospital in Joplin with suspected serious injuries. 

Blake and his passenger, 75-year-old Martha Knackstedt of Fort Scott, were not injured in the crash.
