Seeing peonies in bloom across the city inevitably invokes memories of Decoration Day. My grandparents and neighbors raided their peony bushes as soon as the buds were ready to burst forth, putting the stems into containers that were then stored in refrigerators to keep them from blooming. As May 30th drew near, the stems were taken out of cold storage, placed in coffee cans covered with aluminum foil, and then transported to various cemeteries.
