Sally M. Hart

Sally M. Hart, 87 of Pittsburg, Kansas, passed away Saturday October 7, 2023 at the Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born May 10, 1936 in Pittsburg, the daughter of Charles H.J. Patterson and Gladys (Pyle) Patterson.

She attended St Mary’s from kindergarten through 12th grade, and graduated from Kansas State Teacher’s College in 1958.

Sally is survived by her husband Joe of the home.  They were married on September 26, 1959, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.

She taught school at St. Agnes Catholic School in Roeland Park, Kansas, and St. Mary’s in Pittsburg for a few years, however, her greatest vocation was as a wife and a mother.

Sally was a lifetime member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg.  She was active on the school board and enjoyed leading others in their faith through the RCIA program. Sally was always willing to lend a helping hand to support families who also endured the loss of a child, as well as bereavement groups in the area.  She was active in the Mt. Carmel Ladies Auxiliary, serving as both a member and the group president.

Additional survivors include a daughter: Cindy (Terry Fleck) Shaffer of Asbury, MO; Brian (Susannah) Hart of Overland Park, KS, Pat (Meg Druyor) Hart of Denver CO; grandchildren: Billy Shaffer, Lauren (Parker) Stavens, Lindsey (Kyle) Lauterwasser, Izzy Hart; great grandchildren: Paxton and Lucy Stavens.

She was preceded in death by her beloved son Joey Hart, her parents, three brothers: Charles H. J. Patterson, Jr., Tom Patterson and Mike Patterson, and two sisters: Patti Patterson and her twin, Kathy Benage.

A Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m., Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pittsburg where visitation will follow. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at the church, with Father Michael Simone as celebrant.  Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Our Lady of Lourdes Memorial Fund and/or The PSU Joe and Sally Hart Athletic Scholarship fund through the PSU Foundation. Sally will be remembered as a faithful Catholic, devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and a caring friend to all.
