GIRARD, Kan. — County Clerk Lisa Lusker was challenged by Kansas State Fair Competitions Coordinator Nancy Schmutz to present a competitive exhibit for the State Fair running from Sept. 8 through Sept. 17.
The challenge: a table-top scarecrow measuring 24 inches wide by 24 inches in diameter by 30 inches tall. The top three finishers will receive a donation to their local food bank. The first-place finisher also receives a plaque and “bragging rights.”
Pam Richey and Megan Bauer of the Restorative Justice Authority stepped up and accepted the challenge. Using as many recycled and found materials as possible, Richy and Bauer set about their work. Dubbed “Ed Astra,” a vinegar bottle makes up his body, with arms and legs of twisted burlap stuffed with wheat. A sunflower made from paper plate, yellow ribbon, and seeds constitutes his head. Clothes were made to fit.
The winner of the contest will be determined on Sept. 14 at the fair in Hutchinson.
