Man arrested after shots were fired into neighbor’s window, door

GALENA, Kan. — Officers with the Galena Police Department were notified of a gun being fired in the area of 820 Bellevue Street in Galena at approximately 7:45 p.m. Wednesday evening. 

As officers arrived, they encountered a male subject at the rear of the residence holding a shotgun and staring out the kitchen window. Officers ordered the subject to drop the weapon and he complied with the commands. 

Once the subject was secured, officers found the neighboring residence had multiple shots through the window, door, and siding. No one was home at the time of the shots being fired.

The subject has been identified as 51-year-old Brian M. Smith. He was transported to the Cherokee County Jail and charges were submitted for attempted aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. This is an ongoing investigation and additional charges may be submitted. 

It is believed this is an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the public at this time. The Galena Police Department is thanking the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance during this incident.
