Ret. Col. Larry Lee Renick

Ret. Col. Larry Lee Renick, 84, of Baxter Springs, passed suddenly from this life on Friday, Jan. 13, 2023, at Freeman Hospital in Joplin.

Larry was born Feb. 12, 1938, in Melrose Park, Illinois, to the union of William Howard Renick and Winnie L. (Heard) Renick. He was united in marriage to Cindy Kay (Montgomery) Renick on April 4, 1959, in Picher, Oklahoma.

Larry enlisted as an officer with the United States Air Force on June 23, 1960, serving as a pilot during the Vietnam War. He departed active duty in November 1968 and joined the Air Force Reserves at Richards-Gebaur AFB in Missouri in 1969. Larry lived in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, from 1969 until 1982. He finished his reserve career at NORAD Headquarters, Peterson AFB Co., and retired Colonel. While in the reserves, Larry was a commercial airline pilot for TWA for over thirty years. He dropped the Golden Knights all over the United States.

Larry was a member of the V.F.W., Elk's Lodge, American Legion, and Miami Revvers. Larry enjoyed the lake life, riding motorcycles, antique cars, and flying his airplanes.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, Donny Renick; sister, Jane Renick; and two half-brothers, Richard and Bill Carpenter.

Larry is survived by two sons, Larry L. Renick Jr. and wife Teresa of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and Scott Renick and wife Christina of Baxter Springs, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Karin Renick of Quapaw, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Dawn Conway (Buddy), Leigh Ann Renick, Amanda Renick, Madison Renick, Haley Renick, Lindsay Renick; and three great-grandchildren, Josiah, Katelyn, and Chase.

Memorial graveside service with military honors will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023, at the GAR Cemetery. Eulogist will be Larry's great-nephew, Morgan Carpenter.
