CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — A Quapaw, Ok., man was killed Friday evening in a two-car accident on U.S. 166 near the Baxter Springs city limits, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP).

The crash happened at 5:43 p.m. approximately three miles east of U.S. 69 on U.S. 166, or at milepost 154.2 eastbound.

According to the KHP, a 2015 Freightliner Semi Tractor driven by 50-year-old Petko G. Kirov of Glenview, Ill. was eastbound on U.S. 166, following behind a 2003 Ford Ranger Pickup driven by 54-year-old Jeffrey P. Lansaw of Galena.

The Ford Ranger then slowed and began to make a left turn when the semi attempted to pass on the left, striking the Ford Ranger.

Kirov had no apparent injuries, while Lansaw suffered suspected serious injuries and was sent to Freeman Hospital in Joplin.

The occupant of the Ford Ranger, 58-year-old Jeffrey Sappington of Quapaw, suffered a fatal injury from the crash.

Next of kin was notified and he was sent to Derfelt Funeral Home in Galena.
