Pittsburg State associate professor Dr. Cole Shewmake has been appointed to chair the MIAA’s Faculty Athletics Representative Committee.

Selected by his peers, Shewmake will serve as the new chair of the committee through June of 2025.

“I am honored to have been chosen to chair the MIAA FAR Committee,” said Shewmake in a release. “We have a great group of conscientious and caring individuals in our MIAA FARC.”

Shewmake is an associate professor responsible for teaching a variety of pedagogy courses within the Health, Human Performance, and Recreation Department at PSU. He has served as the Gorillas Faculty Athletics Representative since 2016.

A graduate of Webb City High School and former baseball player at Pittsburg State, Shewmake holds a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a master’s of science degree (Physical Education) from Pittsburg State. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Kinesiology (Pedagogy) from the University of Arkansas.

“I am excited about the new responsibilities for the FARC in the revised MIAA Constitution, especially as it relates to that group’s role related to the health and well-being of MIAA student-athletes,” said MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy. “Cole is the perfect person to help guide the FARC in this area and we look forward to working with him in his new leadership position.”

The league’s FAR committee is composed of the designated Faculty Athletics Representatives at each MIAA  school. The committee’s primary duties and responsibilities include giving consideration and action on waiver requests and eligibility appeals. The committee will also assist the conference office in coordinating coach, athletics administrator and staff education on relevant student-athlete physical and mental health topics.
