On Jan. 15, 1923, residents from across Crawford County gathered to celebrate the joining of three new highways near Franklin; the Jefferson Highway, which ran from New Orleans to Winnipeg, Cananda; the Ozark Trail, which links St. Louis to Santa Fe; and the Commercial Highway that runs concurrent with Jefferson, but connects Pittsburg to the coal fields in northeast Crawford County.
