Updates testing information for two weekends before election day.

Polls close at 9 p.m. EST/8 p.m. CST/7 p.m. MST in four counties: Greeley, Hamilton, Sherman and Wallace.

TESTING INFORMATION:

Testing begins Monday, Sept. 9.

National and state testing will be from noon-6 p.m. EDT (11 a.m.-5 p.m. CST / 10 a.m.-4 p.m. MST). During the weeks of Sept. 9 and Sept. 16, testing will be on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Starting the week of Sept. 23, testing will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Testing will also be held on the two weekends before the General Election: Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27 from noon–5 p.m. ET (11 a.m.–4 p.m. CST / 10 a.m.–3 p.m. MST). Two tests on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. ET (9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. CST / 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. MST) and 4:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m. ET (3:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. CST / 2:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. MST) and Sunday, Nov. 3 from 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. ET (9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. CST / 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. MST).

Test results are created electronically to test the accuracy of the election night reporting system. They should not be broadcast, published, replicated, or posted on websites.

This advisory will be updated throughout the testing period. Changes may be made up until Election Day.

ELECTION DAY:

The API and Digital Features will have zeros by 2 a.m. EST/1 a.m. CST/midnight MST on Election Day.

Race calls: AP will make race calls on election night unless a race is too close to call. Race calls will be made during testing, except on the day of the final test.

Uncontested races: AP does not tabulate uncontested races. On Election Day, any uncontested races will be called after the last polls close. During testing, they will be called at the start of the test, except on the day of the final test.

End of tabulation: AP will advise when its election night tabulation of results has concluded.

DELIVERY NOTES:

API

During testing, INCLUDE resultstype=t (for test results) in your query. If resultstype=t is not included, NO VOTES will be returned. Starting Election Day, INCLUDE resultstype=l (live results) or resultstype=b in your query (includes certified results where available). If resultstype=l or resultstype=b is not included on Election Day, NO VOTES will be returned.

In addition to results, the API also includes the following:

Advance Turnout Data: State-by-state data on advance voting as made available by each state.

Presidential Summary Reports: Provides both popular vote and electoral counts at the state and national summary levels.

Trend / Balance of Power Reports: Provides the national balance of power/trend information for governor, U.S. Senate and U.S. House.

Embeddable AP Newsroom Visuals

Layouts will not display test data outside of AP Newsroom; zeros will be visible if they are posted until polls close Election Day.

During customer testing, layouts with test results can be previewed in the Your Layouts page.

You will need to self-register domains where you wish to publish embeddable layouts. Without this, your layouts WILL NOT RENDER/WILL BE BLANK on Election Day. Any domain you register will include its subdirectories.

All fonts, colors, languages and components of the embeds are customizable via the Your Layouts page in AP Newsroom.

Visuals will still be edited into October of 2024, so watch AP Newsroom for the latest versions.

If you have further questions on how to use or customize the embeds, email [email protected] or view the Quick Start Guide in AP Customer Zone.

Current visuals available for embedding on your platform include:

Election Progress: A “bee swarm” visual showing tabulation and race call progress per state and party, based on the expected vote calculation.

Race Calls: A “waterfall” of race calls occurring by state with time stamps.

Google Trends: A Sankey diagram displaying the top election-related Google Search terms per week and state (or nationally), alongside a map to demonstrate level of interest.

Advance Vote: Information about the available advance vote count data for each state.

2020 Comparison Charts: A chart showing how county vote shares have changed between 2020 and 2024.

All-in-One Map: A layout that includes national representation of all the following, which also can be embedded as separate elements:

Balance of Power: Stacked bar charts designed to provide a heads-up look at which party has control of either chamber of Congress.

National Map: Hybrid geocarto or cartographic representation of the presidential vote count.

State Results: Table displaying numerical vote counts per candidate. Available with or without a map that has three views: Ballots counted, uncounted votes or county leader. Note: No maps are provided for uncontested elections.

U.S. House Results: A district-specific map and table like State Results and/or a collection of cards displaying the race call status in each district.

State Legislature Results: A district-specific map and table like State Results.

Ballot Measures: A district-specific map and table for ballot measures.
