From 1996 to 2000, Kelly worked as a fire control man on the USS Blue Ridge during his service in the U.S. Navy. Afterward, in 2004, he earned his bachelor's degree in political science and history at the University of North Alabama. Subsequently, in 2009, Kelly obtained his MBA from Capella University. In pursuit of further education, he attended the BB&T Banking School at Wake Forest University in 2013 and, more recently, the College for Financial Planning in 2022 to obtain his Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC®) designation.
