Posted

The Frontenac Raiders handed the Fort Scott Tigers their first loss of the season in a battle between two of the best pitchers in the state on Monday in Fort Scott. Frontenac pitcher Avery Johson held the Tigers to one run in seven innings as the Raiders prevailed 2-1.

All three runs were scored in the first inning. The Raiders scored the first two runs after Alaina Sullivan doubled to left field to drive in Mady Logiduici and Johnson drove in Sullivan with a sacrifice fly. The Tigers scored for the only time on an unearned run in the first inning when Abbie Gorman drove in a run on a groundout.

Johnson pitched six scoreless innings, striking out five batters and allowing just one walk. Fort Scott pitcher Kyndal Aikin also pitched six scoreless innings, striking out four and allowing two walks.

After a leadoff walk in the seventh, Johnson retired the next three batters to shut the door on the Tigers, forcing a sacrifice bunt followed by a pop up and a strikeout to end the game.

Johnson improved her record to 3-0 on the season. She is yet to allow an earned run in 19 innings pitched this season.

The Raiders improve to 4-0 and will host Class 2 Missouri team Mount Vernon on Monday at home. The Tigers drop to 4-1 on the season and will face Pittsburg in a Southeastern Kansas League game on Thursday in Pittsburg.
