Kansas NARFE conference set for next week in Lindsborg

Posted

LINDSBORG, Kan. — The Kansas Federation of National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) is holding its Annual State Conference in Lindsborg, Kansas, April 24 to 26. Three chapters in Area 2A, Chanute, Pittsburg and Bourbon County-Ft. Scott, are serving as hosts at the Sundstrom Conference Center in Lindsborg

The chapters have had several responsibilities including getting three program speakers. Two of those speakers are members of the Kansas Humanities Council, which has provided grants for the two speakers from their speakers bureau. Linda Knoll of Pittsburg will present a program on “The Amazon Army,” one of the first if not the first organized protest march by women against poor mining wages and working conditions 101 years ago, marching from Franklin, Kansas, to a number of Southeast Kansas mines.

The second program will be by Lem Sheppard, also from Pittsburg, who will present a program on “The Harlem Renaissance,” a movement of music and creative arts from Harlem across the U.S., by playing the guitar, singing some of the many songs in the program and also sharing poetry.

The Humanities Kansas Speakers Bureau connects communities with humanities professionals to engage audiences with stories that spark conversations and generate new ideas. Lois Carlson, conference chair and member of the Chanute chapter, will also present a program on “Gaslighting.”

The hosting chapters said in a press release that they wish to thank the many businesses and organizations in Bourbon, Crawford, Neosho, Cherokee, Labette and Montgomery counties that are supporting this conference through ads and also items for the welcome bags each attendee will receive.
