Classic operetta coming to PSU

Posted

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The classic production H.M.S. Pinafore; or, The Lass That Loved a Sailor, by the renowned theatrical duo W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, will be coming to Pittsburg State University in early 2023.

“When Josephine, the daughter of Captain Corcoran, falls for Ralph Rackstraw, a lowly seaman, she has to contest with her planned marriage to Sir Joseph Porter, the First Lord of the Admiralty,” according to a description of the operetta on the English National Opera website. “Who she will end up with is anyone’s bet!”

H.M.S. Pinafore originally premiered in London in 1878, and shortly afterwards performances of the comic opera began to appear in the U.S.

PSU Opera Theatre will present two performances of the classic operetta, one at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, and another at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5 at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts. Tickets for both events start at $10. Visit bicknellcenter.com for more information.
