David Leroy Hunt, 80, of Frontenac, Kansas, passed away on Jan. 20, 2025, at Mercy Hospital-Pittsburg.
David was born on July 13, 1944, in Edison, Nebraska, to Doris David Hunt and Leslie Hunt. He grew up in Lincoln, Kansas, and graduated from local schools before attending Emporia State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree in education. He later earned a master's degree from Pittsburg State University.
David spent his life dedicated to education, teaching and coaching students across Kansas. His career included coaching football, basketball, and track at several schools, including Andover, Wellington, Oxford, and Frontenac. He also served as principal in Oxford and assistant principal in Frontenac, leaving a lasting impact on countless students and athletes.
In his personal life, David was a devoted fan of Pittsburg State University Football and the Kansas City Chiefs. Some of his fondest memories were spent attending Pittsburg State practices, where he enjoyed watching his grandson Derek and his teammates in action as often as he could. David traveled many miles to watch Devan and Reese play sports and Jill and Natalie cheer. It was a great treasure to have several grandchildren move to Pittsburg to attend college at PSU. He enjoyed when grandkids would bring friends over for dinner and loved playing poker. There was never a turned down invitation to the Rockin K, Taco Tuesday or Bob’s Grill. In recent years he and Judy took delight in adventures to evening dinners all over the area.
David was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Judy of the home, children Deena Hunt Ford (Kenny), Topeka, Kansas; Robin Hunt, Manhattan, Kansas; Staci Whaley Youngwirth (Ed), Lenexa, Kansas; and Ken Whaley, Caldwell, Kansas. Grandchildren Derek Ryan (Samantha), Jillian Scheuerman (Kris), Devan Whaley (Megan), Ryan Youngwirth, Natalie Stephens, Reese Youngwirth (Macie Lee), Trinity Wong and Aja Wong. Great grandchildren Peyton Ryan, Adilynn Ryan, Dawson Ryan, Sloane Scheuerman, and Griffin Scheuerman. A visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg, Kansas. A family burial will be at a later date at his final resting place in the Girard City Cemetery.
David will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy of service to others and love for the game will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
