A-Camping We Will Go

There are people who love to fish and hike and camp and then there’s me. I prefer to sit and read; sometimes I’ll do it outside, sitting on the deck until the heat and/or bugs force me back into the air-conditioned comfort of my house. Camping is good in theory, not so much in practice.

But there’s one kind of camp that I can get behind: book camp, which is why this year’s summer reading program for adults is “Camp Read-a-Lot.” Come by the second floor Reference Desk and get your Reading Trail map, which will show you three different “trails” to follow to earn a designated badge as well as a prize. You can hike (i.e., read) one, two, or all three trails to become a Riverside Reader, Hilltop Hiker, or Mountaintop Master. All completed forms turned in by Aug. 3 will be entered into a grand prize drawing.

To help get you started, we’re offering a special “Books & Gear” bag to 50 folks that contain two books specially chosen and checked out to the reader along with appropriate camping “supplies.” The bags will be delivered to those living inside the city limits by our special Camp Read-a-Lot van (a.k.a., bookmobile) on Thursday, June 16. Pick-ups can be made at the library between June 16 and 18. Slots are filling up quickly so call 620-230-5560 to order yours today.

Our favorite Wildcat District Extension Agent, Jesse Gilmore, will present a program about foraging skills on Tuesday, June 28, at 6:30 p.m. Those skills will come in handy when you take part in an indoor scavenger hunt from July 11 through July 23. Jerome, our camping library gnome, will need your help locating his special woodland friends. Once you complete your form, turn it in for a badge and another opportunity to win the grand prize drawing.

To wrap up the summer fun we’ll hold a Campfire Tales & Tunes at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27. What better way to end your camping adventure than with stories, songs, and s’mores!

So put on your hiking boots and trek your way to the library to pick up your camping supplies, and by that I mean books, and start your summer adventure at Camp Read-a-Lot.
