When she talks to teacher candidates, Julie Crum, superintendent in Lakin USD 215, emphasizes the community of 2,200. “I showcase the community,” Crum said. “It’s peaceful, there’s almost no crime,” she said. “We don’t even have a stoplight. And if you want things like a Walmart, we’re only 25 minutes from Garden City.” Crum, with school board member and local veterinarian Kyle Berning, represented their school district at Pittsburg State University’s Teacher Interview Day on Tuesday. They made the 400-mile, six-and-a-half-hour journey to join about 75 other districts from Kansas and Missouri who are looking to fill teaching positions from an unusually shallow pool of applicants. more
