Monty Ray Amick

Monty Ray Amick, 53, of Lawrence, Kansas, passed away May 17, 2022. He was born July 9, 1968 in Emporia, Kansas to David and Donna Amick (Dillon). He attended elementary school in Cunningham, Kansas and high school and university in Pittsburg, Kansas. He graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1986 and Pittsburg State University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. He participated in marching band, concert band, and jazz band at PHS and PSU. Although Monty could play several instruments, his primary instrument was the trombone. Monty married Stephanie Nichols on Mar. 10, 1991. Of this union two children were born. They later divorced. He married Megan Hulse on April 13, 2010. Monty worked for the Reuter Organ Company in Lawrence for 24 years as a cabinet maker and finisher. He was the supervisor of the case and finishing departments at the time of his passing. Monty produced many beautiful wooden parts for pipe organs. He pursued his interest in law enforcement by attending the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center. He then worked for the cities of Scranton, Kansas and Carbondale, Kansas as a part time patrolman. Monty attended the Lawrence Seventh-day Adventist Church and was an elder at the time of his passing. In his free time, Monty enjoyed being outdoors hunting or cycling, and when he was indoors, he enjoyed making items for family and friends such as wooden pistol grips, wooden wallets, knives, tools, leather holsters, and leather gear for a renaissance festival.

Monty was preceded in death by his grandparents Betty Amick of Cunningham and Vernon and Margaret Dillon of Topeka. He is survived by his wife Megan of the home, and two children; Morgan (Oliver) Amick and Kathryn Jacobson (Amick) and husband Griffin; his father, David Amick; brother, Michael Amick and his sons: Finley and Sawyer Amick; and by the mother of the children, Stephanie Swan, all of Lawrence, Kansas; his mother, Donna (Lance) Sheldon; sister, Maggie Amick and her children: Lola, Cade, and Connar Southard, all of Pittsburg. Celebration of Life service will be 5 p.m. Monday, June 27, 2022 at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home rumsey-yost.com in Lawrence.
