Local Swimmers set records in Kansas City

Schools in the Pittsburg metropolitan area do not offer swim teams, so talented swimmers join as cooperatives for the Fort Scott high school swim team. On Tuesday some of those swimmers set records at KC Turner high school.

“We are currently in a cooperative agreement with four other schools including Frontenac, Northeast, Pittsburg, and Humboldt,” said Fort Scott swim coach Madeline McCoy.

Swimmers from the area include Freshman Addie Zamora from Northeast, senior Hannah Lee, and juniors Callie Underwood, and Hanna Do from Frontenac. Pittsburg swimmers include sophomore Ava Steier and freshman Rachel Miller and Jazzy Rose.

A team consisting of Zamora, Do, Steier and Emma B’Hymer placed first in the 200 Medley relay, with a time of 2:05.22. “This is a state qualifying time,” said McCoy. “Unfortunately, this team is not allowed to compete at state because they are not all from the same team.”

Steier also placed first in the 200-yard Freestyle swim and finished with a time of 2:12.99. According to McCoy, “Steier currently has a state consideration time and is seven tenths of a second off from a state qualification time.”

Pittsburg’s Steier continued to dominate in the pool, placing first in the 100-yard Freestyle swim with a time of 59.80.

The first-place team for the 400-yard Freestyle Relay consisted of Steier, B’Hymer, Zamora and Do. The team finished with a time of 4:22.23, “giving them a state consideration time,” McCoy said.

“The atmosphere of this meet was electric,” said McCoy. “The girls were great teammates, competitors, and supporters of everyone. I am pleased with these athletes, their diligence, and their sportsmanship.”

According to McCoy the team has set some goals, “the girls are working hard and have set some great goals for themselves for the season.” McCoy said that the team has grown quite a bit from last season, “it is so nice to see growth in a new program and so much dedication out of these athletes.”
