The back half of their spacious backyard overflowed with vegetable plants — lettuce, beans, potatoes, okra, cucumbers, onions, tomatoes, and a gooseberry plant or two (which I gave a wide berth because of the sticker-y branches and I didn’t care for the fruit. Some years they rented a garden plot elsewhere in town so they could grow even more produce. They had the greenest of thumbs and we got to reap the fruits — and vegetables — of their labor.
