Diana C. Kerle

Diana C. Kerle, 92, of Pittsburg, KS, died Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.
She was born January 23, 1931 in St. Joseph, MO, the daughter of Stanley and Neva (Litler) Lockwood.
Diana moved to Kansas City, MO, where she joined the nursing team at Research Hospital. She embarked on an educational journey, enrolling in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC).
On July 1, 1962, she was united in marriage to Donald Kerle in Kansas City, MO; he preceded her in death on December 18, 1999. Together, they raised two children.
In 1972, Diana and her family relocated to Pittsburg, KS, where she embraced new professional opportunities. She dedicated herself to her work at Mt. Carmel Hospital in Pittsburg.
Diana was recruited by Pittsburg State University to join their Nursing faculty. Over the years, she became a cherished member of the PSU community, earning the distinguished title of Professor Emeritus.
Continuing her pursuit of knowledge and expertise, she obtained her master's degree in Nursing from Wichita State University in 1977.
Throughout her career at PSU, she achieved significant milestones, including serving as the president of the Faculty Senate on two separate occasions, where she became the first woman to hold this position.
Diana was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg. Her faith led her to serve as an Elder, a Deacon, and a Trustee, providing guidance and support to her fellow church members.
After retirement, she became a member of the Retired Teachers Association and the PSU Retired Faculty and Rotary International, further contributing her wisdom and experience to these organizations.
She is survived by her two sons, Kirk B. Kerle of Overland Park, KS, and Keith R. Kerle of Verona, WI.
Diana was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Memorial services will be held at 2 pm, Friday, June 9, 2023 at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials for Diana Kerle be designated to the Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing at Pittsburg State University. Memorials can be mailed to the PSU Foundation P.O. Box 4005, Pittsburg, KS.
