PITTSBURG, Kan. — In a private ceremony, cousins Ken Wilbert and Jim Kuhns pay their respects to Kuhns’ father, James, at the Highland Park cemetery in Pittsburg. Wilbert, who had recently returned from France, had two small bags of sand taken from the Normandy beaches, one from Omaha Beach and the other from Utah. Wanting to honor his uncle, a veteran of D-Day, Wilbert called his cousin in Texas for an impromptu ceremony over the Memorial Day weekend.
